Abstract

The Pellet Durability Index (PDI) is the international standard used to assess the physical quality of pellets, which can vary depending on the ingredients used in the diet formulation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of canola oil (CO) or crude soybean oil (CSO), alone or combined with aluminosilicate, on the PDI of high-fiber pellets. A diet based on corn, soybean meal, and dehydrated alfalfa was formulated, supplemented with CO or CSO as concentrated energy sources, with or without aluminosilicate, and pelleted without thermal conditioning. The variables analyzed in the resulting pellets included: PDI (Pellet Durability Index), length, density, water resistance, moisture content, and ash content. A completely randomized factorial design (2 × 2) was used to analyze the factors, where Factor A was the binder level (0 or 10 g per kg of feed), and Factor B was the concentrated energy source (CO or CSO). Results showed an interaction between the amount of aluminosilicate added and the energy source: 10 g of aluminosilicate combined with CO yielded the highest PDI at 85.8 % (P ? 0.05), compared to CSO, which reached 73.6 %. Pellet length, density, water resistance, moisture, and ash content were not affected by the addition of aluminosilicate or oil type. It is concluded that adding 10 g of aluminosilicate per kg of feed increases pellet durability by 19.2 % when using canola oil and by 7.6 % when using crude soybean oil.
